Bariatric Surgery

A speciality that comprises diverse weight loss
procedures for those who struggle with health
concerns as a result of a high BMI or obesity.

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery refers to different procedures that aim to restrict the size of the stomach or intestines. By decreasing the size of these organs, we can help you limit the amount of food you eat before feeling full and eventually stabilise the release of ghrelin, your body’s hunger hormone. Patients who receive bariatric surgery lose up to 70% of their excess body weight within the first year, and in doing so make drastic improvements to their weight-related health issues.

When to Consider Bariatric Surgery

These procedures should be considered when your BMI is 35 and you have diabetes, hypertension or abnormal cholesterol, among other obesity-related conditions. If you’ve dedicated time and effort to a healthy diet and exercise but haven’t seen progress, and continue to suffer from significant medical issues as a result, then it’s time to get in touch. You don’t have to navigate this issue alone.

Bariatric surgery consists of varied methods and procedures that are chosen by a specialist surgeon after reviewing your specific circumstances. My team and I perform the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, which is a minimally invasive, safe option for my patients with a BMI over 35 who risk suffering from potential complications undergoing anaesthesia or a gastric bypass. During this procedure, about 75% of the stomach is removed, leaving a gastric sleeve that’ll help you control hunger without affecting your ability to absorb nutrients from food.

Dr. Taghreed is a testament to the priceless value of human care. At every stage, her medical expertise has supported my surgical journey towards recovery, but more so, her genuine care and concern is something that is comforting and makes you feel safe.

I will forever remember how she came to the surgical ward after midnight just to make sure I was okay, and how even on her weekends and in her personal time, she would reach out to support my recovery and be there for me in any way she can. No words can do her justice! I’m blessed to have done my surgery with her: expertise and care is something to treasure. Every patient should have an experience like the experience Dr. Taghreed authentically creates.

I went to Dr. Taghreed for a 2nd opinion. Not only is she super friendly, she patiently listened to my concerns. We agreed to proceed with surgery and she explained the process thoroughly and answered all of my questions. On the morning of the surgery, she visited me before I went into the operating room, to make sure I didn’t have any more questions.

After surgery, she was very helpful in helping me manage the pain and made sure I was comfortable. I had a lot of questions at my follow-up appointment and she was very patient at that time. I highly recommend Dr. Taghreed. She has a great bedside manner and clearly enjoys her work.
